To take care of the planet, we take several actions on a daily basis. But the bathroom is a place where we sometimes forget to make efforts to reduce our ecological footprint. Want to do more for the environment without compromising your beauty or hygiene routine? Here are five eco-friendly ideas for the bathroom.
Replace disposable razors
Disposable razors are largely made of plastic and are not recyclable. Because their blades wear out quickly, they are plentiful in the dump. So what are the alternatives? First, there is the epilator: a machine that removes hair and lasts for many years. It is also possible to turn to the eternal razor (or safety razor). It can be used for a lifetime, as you only need to change the blades, which survive many uses before losing their sharpness.
Dare to use tissue toilet paper
Many people are reluctant to swap the usual toilet paper for cloth wipes. Often, it’s just a matter of perception and habit. Simply place a basket near the toilet that contains these pieces of absorbent cloth. Once used, they are placed in a waterproof bag to await the next wash. This is a great gesture for the environment, especially when you know that even recycled toilet paper has a high ecological footprint. Note that it is recommended to use it only for urine.
Choose hairbrushes and toothbrushes made of bamboo
Bamboo is one of the most environmentally friendly plants available, not least because it grows so fast. And this material is 100% biodegradable. That’s why more and more people are using hair and toothbrushes with bamboo handles.
Opt for shampoo, conditioner and bar soap
We know that plastic packaging should be avoided if we want to reduce our ecological footprint. In the bathroom, it’s best to opt for skin and hair soaps in bars, without packaging. You can put them in small mesh bags that are very practical when hung in the shower. Note that these products are just as effective as their bottled counterparts.
Avoid products that contain plastic microbeads
Did you know that many beauty products, such as facial lotions, contain plastic microbeads? These are used to exfoliate the epidermis, i.e. to remove dead skin. The problem is that they pollute our waterways. Many companies are now using fully biodegradable silica beads that come from mineral sources. Encourage them!
Installing eco-friendly faucets
Drinking water is an asset. But in Quebec, a small percentage is used for food, which should be the opposite! At home, it can be easy to waste it without realizing it. The first step to curb our consumption is to change the faucets, especially in the bathroom where our beauty routine requires a lot of water! A shower head and slow-flow faucets are a must. Also, it is good to install a toilet that has the ENERGY STAR logo because it uses less water. And of course, it’s best to avoid baths (or fill them to one-third full) or opt for short showers.
As you can see, it is possible to take care of yourself and the planet at the same time!
