Living in Compton

Compton was founded in 1796 by the pioneer Jesse Pennoyer, and the current municipality has included the former village of Compton Station since 1999. Long predominantly English-speaking, the population became mostly French-speaking in the early 20th century, notably with the arrival of families from the Beauce. This is where Louis S. St-Laurent, Prime Minister of Canada, was born. The territory, crossed by the Coaticook River, is known for its orchards and agri-food producers.

« I find it fascinating that a Prime Minister of Canada grew up behind the counter of a general store in Compton: it shows how important this village once was. »
