Established in 1739 under the name Pointe-à-Olivier, Saint-Mathias-sur-Richelieu stretches along chemin des Patriotes, on the shore of the Chambly Basin. Its 1784 church and the stone wall of its cemetery are among the best-preserved religious ensembles in Québec. The territory combines a village core, farmland and a few industrial businesses. Residents mainly come here for space and proximity to the water.

Built in 1784, the church has kept an interior décor whose main altar dates from the late 18th century. The stone wall surrounding the cemetery is one of the few of its kind still standing on the continent.
