Incorporated in 1917 from part of Saint-Philippe's territory, Saint-Mathieu is a rural municipality where almost all the land is devoted to agriculture. The Rivière de la Tortue winds through it before joining the St. Lawrence. The village, centred on rue Principale and its church, keeps a peaceful character while remaining accessible via Autoroutes 15 and 30. Residents are mostly established families, farmers and people seeking tranquillity.
