Lachute owes its name to the falls of the rivière du Nord, around which settlers from Vermont and Scotland founded "The Chute Settlement" toward the end of the 18th century. The arrival of the Montréal-Ottawa railway around 1870 and the river's waterpower made it an industrial centre, with the Ayers woollen mill and the J.C. Wilson paper mill. In 1966, the city merged with Ayersville, the mill village. The seat of the Argenteuil RCM, Lachute retains a built heritage of Anglo-Saxon influence and a French- and English-speaking population.

The Hôpital de Lachute (Centre multiservices de santé et de services sociaux d'Argenteuil) and the industrial parks make the city the services hub of the RCM.
Agricultural fair
Descended from an agricultural society founded in 1825-1826 and based in Lachute since 1886, this fair presents itself as the oldest in Quebec and the second oldest in Canada. It takes place every year in early July and celebrates Argenteuil's agricultural traditions.
