In Saint-Eustache, I find it fascinating that you can still see the marks of the 1837 cannonballs on the church facade, steps from the shops of boulevard Arthur-Sauvé.

Saint-Eustache, the main city of the Deux-Montagnes RCM, stretches along the north shore of the rivière des Mille Îles and is crossed by the rivière du Chêne. Founded in 1770, it was the site of the Battle of Saint-Eustache on December 14, 1837, during the Patriotes Rebellion; the church, burned and then rebuilt, still bears the marks. The Vieux-Saint-Eustache, with its mill, manor and summer markets, sits alongside residential neighbourhoods and a major commercial and industrial hub along Highway 640. The city attracts families as well as retirees and North Shore workers.

Historic site
Built in 1762 on the rivière du Chêne, it is the oldest water-powered flour mill still operating in Canada, designated a national historic site. You can watch the millstones turn and leave with wheat or buckwheat flour ground on site.
