Chertsey was founded in 1848 by the Société des Défricheurs; the parish of Saint-Théodore-de-Chertsey was canonically erected in 1866. Its territory has 168 lakes, including Lac Chertsey, Lac Gour and Lac Beaulac, reputed to be the highest in Lanaudière. The former church, completed in 1897, has become La Belle Église, a cultural centre that has kept its religious vocation. Long a vacation spot for Montrealers, the municipality saw its permanent population grow by nearly 13% between 2016 and 2021.
