Rawdon, the seat of the Matawinie RCM, is located at the southern edge of the Canadian Shield. The township, created in 1799, first welcomed Irish settlers, then French Canadians starting in 1844 and, after the First World War, families from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. From the early 20th century, the railway and the lake made it a prized resort destination, and many period cottages have become permanent residences. The population still grows every summer with the camps and cottages.
