Real estate broker inVarennes

Varennes fascinates me because in just a few minutes you go from a 19th-century basilica on the riverfront to energy research centres.

Living in Varennes

Varennes dates back to 1672, when René Gaultier, sieur de Varennes, received land grants from Intendant Jean Talon, and it obtained city status in 1972. On the shore of the St. Lawrence, it is the birthplace of Saint Marguerite d'Youville, whose sanctuary stands next to the Sainte-Anne basilica. Since the 1970s, the city has also developed an industrial and scientific hub, with Hydro-Québec's research institute (IREQ) and CanmetENERGY. It's home to families as well as workers in these sectors.

Why Varennes

What draws people here

Transportation

Autoroute 30 and Routes 132 and 229 serve the city, and exo buses connect it to the South Shore.

Heritage

The Sainte-Anne basilica, designated a minor basilica in 1993, and the Saint Marguerite d'Youville sanctuary form the city's historic heart.

River

Parc de la Commune, on the shore of the St. Lawrence, hosts events such as the Les Grands Airs de Varennes kite festival.

Research and industry

Hydro-Québec's IREQ, CanmetENERGY and the Novoparc form a research hub, next to a chemical and petrochemical industrial zone along the river.

My favourite spot in Varennes

Sanctuaire sainte Marguerite d'Youville et basilique Sainte-Anne

Religious heritage

The sanctuary, on rue Sainte-Anne, includes a museum with large stained-glass windows and the Romanesque-Byzantine Sainte-Anne basilica, consecrated in 1888, where Saint Marguerite d'Youville rests. It's a memorable visit for understanding the history of Varennes and that of the first Canadian-born saint.

« When I introduce people to Varennes, I often start with rue Sainte-Anne: the basilica and the sanctuary immediately set the tone for old Varennes, just steps from the river. »
