Verchères owes its name to its first seigneur, François Jarret de Verchères, and is known for Madeleine de Verchères, who defended the fort against an Iroquois attack in 1692. The village stretches along the St. Lawrence and is crossed from east to west by Route 132. Its old village, with its narrow streets, has preserved a remarkable built heritage. Verchères is also the hometown of several well-known figures, including composer Calixa Lavallée and former premier Bernard Landry.
