In Lanoraie, I find a true chemin du Roy village on the banks of the river, with a maritime history you can still feel in its village heart.

Living in Lanoraie

A site frequented by the St. Lawrence Iroquoians for about 5,000 years, Lanoraie was a stopover on the chemin du Roy, then an active port and a shipbuilding yard in the 19th century, linked to Joliette by railway. Tobacco growing then marked the agricultural landscape for decades. The current municipality was born in 2000 from the merger of Saint-Joseph-de-Lanoraie and Lanoraie-d'Autray, and since 2009 it has protected the architectural character of its village core. You will find families, retirees and commuters who want the countryside near the river.

Why Lanoraie

What draws people here

Transportation

Highway 40 and Route 138 link Lanoraie to Montréal, Joliette and Trois-Rivières.

Peatlands

The Lanoraie peatland complex, which includes the Tourbières-de-Lanoraie ecological reserve, is a protected natural environment of great value, partly managed by a conservation society founded in 1992.

Heritage

The village core, the church and presbytery, the Faust house (1860) and the L'Escale-du-Roy reception centre bear witness to the past as a chemin du Roy stopover.

My favourite spot in Lanoraie

Maison des Cageux du fleuve Saint-Laurent

Museum

This museum and maritime café on rue Notre-Dame tells the epic story of the cageux, the log drivers who guided timber rafts down the river, with an exhibit, a film and a reconstructed raft. A great way to understand Lanoraie's maritime past.

« Lanoraie was a port and a shipyard long before being a distant suburb, and I find that this history gives the village a character you do not find elsewhere. »
