In Napierville, I'm walking on a piece of Québec history: this is where Robert Nelson proclaimed the Republic of Lower Canada in 1838.

Living in Napierville

Napierville is a compact village, entirely enclosed by Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville and crossed from south to north by the Rivière L'Acadie. It owes its name to Napier Christie Burton, the local seigneur, and was founded in 1815 as a seigneurial village. In November 1838, thousands of Patriotes camped here and Dr. Robert Nelson proclaimed the establishment of a provisional republic. Today, the village offers services, shops and neighbourhood life to a diverse population, from families to retirees.

Why Napierville

What draws people here

Transportation

Routes 219 and 221 serve the village, just minutes from Autoroute 15.

Heritage

Église Saint-Cyprien, rebuilt after a fire in 1886, and the former courthouse mark the heart of the village.

Rivière L'Acadie

The river crosses the territory from south to north and hosted the Patriotes at the point that bears their name.

My favourite spot in Napierville

Parc de la Pointe-des-Patriotes

Historic site

A monument was unveiled here in 1988 to mark the 150th anniversary of the events of 1838 in Napierville. It's a good starting point to discover the village, its Église Saint-Cyprien and its former courthouse.

« Few villages this size can say a declaration of independence was read there; it gives the streets of old Napierville a very special character. »
