Settled starting in 1849, Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts took off with the arrival of the railway in 1892, when sanatoriums and rest homes were established there: it was believed that the pure mountain air helped treat tuberculosis. Wealthy Montréal families then built residences on the shores of the lac des Sables, which remains the heart of the city. Today, it is a regional services centre with the Centre hospitalier Laurentien, elementary and secondary schools and a bustling downtown. Families, healthcare and service workers, retirees and many vacationers live here.

Performance hall
Housed in a barn from the 1920s, Le Patriote de Sainte-Agathe has welcomed the great names of Québécois song, from Félix Leclerc to Gilles Vigneault, since 1970. Renovated in 2022, it offers year-round programming and received the Félix for show presenter of the year in 2017.
